The word Freikorps simply means "Free Corps". Freikorps had existed in Germany for 160 years as mercenaries before their demobilization in the 1920's and subsequent brief hire by the nazis as mercenaries: 10 years later Hitler would purge and denounce their hired mercenaries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freikorps
