Freikorps had existed in Germany for 160 years as mercenaries before their demobilization in the 1920's and subsequent brief hire by the nazis as mercenaries: 10 years later Hitler would purge and denounce their hired mercenaries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freikorps
