This is factually incorrect. The Australian Electoral Commission has clarified, as legislation also does, that both 'yes' and 'no' are valid voting options while anything else risks not being counted. For example a tick *may* be viewed as a yes vote. https://www.aec.gov.au/referendums/aec/faqs.html
