Original Note:

For context, during WW2 the US did not have a Secretary of Defense. The position was created with the National Security Act of 1947. Before this, the War Department & Navy Department operated separately under their respective secretaries. The first SecDef was James Forrestal. https://history.defense.gov/DOD-History/Secretaries-of-Defense/ https://www.defense.gov/Multimedia/Experience/The-History-of-the-Department-of-Defense/#1947
