Original Note:
ADSB Exchange did not use the term flying dark. They said it was not broadcasting ADSB, the newest transponder technology. It was broadcasting using an older Mode-C transponder, which is how ADSB Exchange can show positions of the helicopter via multilateration (MLAT). https://globe.adsbexchange.com/?icao=a97753,ae313d&lat=38.847&lon=-77.023&zoom=14.5&showTrace=2025-01-30 https://x.com/adsbex/status/1884793847068164379?s=46&t=3mEEe6AWLbldwN7p5Q-N8A https://adsbx.discourse.group/t/multilateration-mlat-how-it-works-and-why-you-should-care/325
