The so-called Nazi salute was adopted by the Nazi Party in the mid-1920's after being used by the Italian Fascists, who were inspired by 20th Century art with no connections to ancient Roman culture. It is a clear reference to our recent history and WW2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_salute
