The Irish Potato Famine (1845-52) was indeed a famine. It was caused by a plant disease (blight) that destroyed the potato crops when farmers only relied on potatoes. Nonetheless, the lack of help from the British government aggravated it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Famine_(Ireland)
