Original Note:

Irrigation and agricultural projects introduced by the USSR caused the surface are of the Aral Sea to shrink and salinity to rise. This combined with heavy pesticide use caused the ecological disaster. Today, multinational efforts are slowly repairing the damage. http://www.columbia.edu/~tmt2120/introduction.htm https://www.marineinsight.com/environment/aral-sea-disaster-why-one-of-the-biggest-inland-seas-dried-up/
