Due to inflation this graph is misleading. US debt instead needs to be considered relative to GDP, or the size of the economy. For example, the U.S. had similarly high levels of debt relative to GDP after World War 2. See the graph here: https://econofact.org/why-is-the-u-s-debt-expected-to-keep-growing
