Original Note:
While the name implies that permafrost is permanent, this is misleading. Permafrost is scientifically defined as ground that stays frozen for at least two consecutive years. It can thaw due to natural climate cycles, human activity, or, most notably, climate change. https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/permafrost https://science.nasa.gov/science-research/earth-science/milankovitch-orbital-cycles-and-their-role-in-earths-climate/ https://www.earthobservatory.nasa.gov/features/CarbonCycle
