Original Note:
Slavery has been illegal in Britain since William (the Conquerer) outlawed it in 1086. The legal Somerset Case of 1772 reinforced this and led to Britain's "Crusade against Slavery" that ended the practice almost worldwide. So Britain really did complain. A lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnVAq9k85gI
