Blue Origin’s safety system for New Shepard initiates its retro-thrust system prior to touchdown. This system expels a burst of nitrogen gas that slows down the landing to roughly 2mph. This does indeed result in a soft landing. The large dust plume is a result of that burst. https://www.blueorigin.com/safety
