Original Note:

The 13th amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude “except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” This means that prisoners can legally be required to perform labor involuntarily. So prison labor can be viewed as slavery. https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/amendmentxiii https://www.aclu.org/news/racial-justice/the-13th-amendment-keeps-slavery-alive-in-prisons/ https://eji.org/news/the-13th-amendment-did-not-end-slavery-for-people-in-prison/
