Original Note:

In supersaturated air, ice crystals in an aircraft’s contrail can't sublimate back into vapour. Instead, they grow as excess moisture condenses onto them, causing the contrail to persist and even expand, forming a visible trail that lasts much longer than in drier air. https://www.metlink.org/fieldwork-resource/contrails/ https://www.globe.gov/web/s-cool/home/observation-and-reporting/contrails/persistent-contrails https://scied.ucar.edu/image/persistent-spreading-contrails
