A pesar de la tragedia, esto no es lo que ocurrió. El Dep. de Conserv. Ambiental de NY está investigando la posesión ilegal de animales salvajes infectados con rabia. La ardilla mordió a un investigador, por lo que la mataron para comprobar si estaba enferma.
