Europeans did usher violence. They enslaved natives in harsh systems like the encomienda, killing many. Natives though violent at times also were relatively peaceful and traded with Europeans. This was the natives land, they were trying to protect against foreign enroachment https://www.britannica.com/topic/encomienda
