Original Note:

The word spooky has etymological roots from ghost in Dutch. The slur in question originated in WW2 when black soldiers called themselves the “Spookwaffe”. The term spooky predates this usage of the word and was first used in the 1850’s. Spooky is unrelated to the racist term https://www.oed.com/dictionary/spooky_adj?tl=true https://www.etymonline.com/word/spook
