Original Note:

The first published reports of contrails appeared during and shortly after World War I when aircraft were finally able to reach the altitudes required for contrail formation. In fact, World War II pilots were able to use contrails to easily track down enemy aircraft. https://www.globe.gov/web/s-cool/home/observation-and-reporting/contrails/history-of-contrails-and-contrail-research2
