Homosexuality is usually defined as "sexual interest in and attraction to members of one’s own sex". https://www.britannica.com/topic/homosexuality So the key is sex, not gender. A gay man is therefore a man attracted to other males. Whilst some may use other definitions, it is not homophobic to use this definition of gay.
