Original Note:

The advice from lifeguards is not to jump in to rescue somebody in the water unless they cannot be rescued by reaching them with a long object or throwing them something buoyant. Somebody who is panicked in the water can drag their rescuer underwater drowning them both. https://www.royallifesaving.com.au/stay-safe-active/in-an-emergency/how-to-carry-out-a-rescue-safely
