Original Note:

Zero was independently developed in several cultures, but ancient Indian mathematician Brahmagupta (7th century) is credited with formalizing it. He treated zero as a number and developed arithmetic rules involving it. The concept spread to the Islamic world and then Europe. https://www.britannica.com/science/mathematics/The-foundations-of-mathematics
