Original Note:

This is not necessarily true. Gauze comes from the word garzatum and the term garças from c. 1250. A French philosopher, Du Cange suggested connecting it to the place name ghazza but it is more likely to derive from Persian gazi, a thin cloth, qaz, raw silk. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauze#:~:text=Gauze%20is%20a%20thin%2C%20translucent,the%20weft%20firmly%20in%20place.
