Around 1% of people at the time owned at least 200 slaves, around 20% of people in the Confederacy owned at least one (https://socialequity.duke.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/8.10.20.pdf) The Confederacy had 17,75% of total US free population (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1860_United_States_census) Hence, 3,55% of US free population would´ve owned slaves. Point still stands, but % is wrong.
