Original Note:
In August 1939 the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. After the start of WW2 Stalin sought even closer ties with Hitler including the possibility of Axis membership. It was only the Nazi invasion in 1941 that caused the Soviets to join the Allies. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molotov%E2%80%93Ribbentrop_Pact https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union_in_World_War_II#The_division_of_Eastern_Europe_and_other_invasions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German%E2%80%93Soviet_economic_relations_(1934%E2%80%931941)#Possible_Soviet_Axis_membership_and_further_economic_talks
