Cet apiculteur, Steve Brown, a été contraint de brûler ses ruches suite à la détection de spores de Paenibacillus larvae (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/north-canterbury-honey-company-forced-to-burn-thousands-of-bee-hives-after-detection-of-american-foulbrood-disease/PCVKOSXXRZEKNAC35OIEDFWXRA/). Cette bactérie n'est en rien nouvelle. Elle a été détectée dès 1877 en NZ (https://www.mpi.govt.nz/dmsdocument/50047-American-foulbrood-Paenibacillus-larvae-Factsheet) et fait l'objet d'une tentative d'éradication depuis 1998 (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/the-country/news/american-foulbrood-disease-increase-destroys-over-3000-beehives-in-one-year/QWHICFLT4ZGOPCNXUC2RZW74UY/)
