They have had multiple referendums regarding independence, most recently in 2021, and the inhabitant have consistently voted to stay within France. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_New_Caledonian_independence_referendum There is also zero proof France is “trying to cut off their access to the outside world”.
