Original Note:

Singular they/them pronouns have been in English since before 18th Century (https://www.oed.com/discover/a-brief-history-of-singular-they/?tl=true). These also better accomodate third gender folks, a category recognized by the Supreme Court of India (https://main.sci.gov.in/jonew/judis/41411.pdf). Hindi pronouns like "वे", "उनको", etc. are examples of local singular they/them usage.
