Original Note:
These are contrails, which are simply water vapor or ice crystals that form when hot exhaust from an aircraft's engines meets cold air at high altitudes. The gridlike nature of US flight lanes tends to cause crosshatched contrails. Persistence depends on relative humidity. https://contrailscience.com/ https://web.archive.org/web/20160911201650/http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/11/8/084011 https://www.metabunk.org/threads/calculator-for-rhi-and-contrail-persistence-criteria.7196/
