Dara is wrong about the reason for the charge. It was not duty being paid, but VAT - gifts under £39 are free from VAT, but marking the parcel as a gift with a value of 50 Euro is around £42, so VAT will have been applied on both the parcel contents and shipping. https://www.gov.uk/goods-sent-from-abroad/tax-and-duty
