Original Note:

A popular theory for the lineage of the modern hot cross bun is the "Alban Bun" attributed to a St Albans monk, Thomas Rocliffe in c.14, handed out to the poor on Good Friday. It has been part of English (and since 1707, British) Christian culture for 7 centuries https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/easter/a-history-of-hot-cross-buns/ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8598312.stm https://oldweirdscotland.com/inverness-hot-cross-buns/
