This is a well know tourist scam that you can see in both Africa and in Ecuador. The forces involved are not enough to cause water to swirl this dramatically. You would need a much larger vessel and/or a very long time for the water to be completely still to see this effect. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/can-somebody-finally-sett/
