Original Note:
Newborns have low stores of vitamin k, which is needed for blood to clot normally, & therefore are at risk of spontaneous bleeding. When that happens in the brain or other organs it is catastrophic. One dose of vitamin k after birth is standard of care to prevent this. https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/vitamink/faqs.html https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/prenatal/delivery-beyond/Pages/Where-We-Stand-Administration-of-Vitamin-K.aspx https://www.chop.edu/conditions-diseases/vitamin-k-deficiency-bleeding-hemorrhagic-disease-newborn
