The source is a third-person account from a passenger that allegedly spoke to the Captain. https://www.avweb.com/flight-safety/technical-event-cited-in-787-sudden-loss-of-altitude/ Airliners have 3 separate altimeters. A “standby” altimeter is located on a separate electrical system & is unlikely to fail
