In the fictional Dune universe, you can, in fact, "thump sand". The books describe a phenomenon known as "Drum Sand" where sand can emit sounds through vibrations. https://dune.fandom.com/wiki/Drum_sands While this does not work on Earth, this is Science Fiction and sand on other planets has not been tested yet.
