The previous government did commission an evaluation of its pilot free school lunch programme: https://www.education.govt.nz/news/ka-ora-ka-ako-healthy-school-lunches-interim-evaluation-report-released/ It found large benefits for students' diets and overall wellbeing. There wasn't enough data to draw conclusions on attendance and results, but international evidence is strong: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8000006/
