Original Note:

In Hesiod's Theogony, Medusa was born one of three Gorgons and engaged in consensual sex with Poseidon. The story of Medusa having been transformed into a Gorgon after being raped was a literary invention 700 years later by the Roman poet Ovid, and is not the Greek tradition. https://www.perseus.tufts.edu/hopper/text?doc=Perseus%3Atext%3A1999.01.0130%3Acard%3D270
