These sardines are migrating from cool-temperate waters to subtropical waters. The behaviour is triggered by the upwelling of cold water they get sandwiched between the coast and a southward-flowing hot current that exceeds the sardines physiological capacity. https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.abf4514
