The patterns are not generated from the air. Vibrations from the bow scraping the panel cause those vibrations in the panel to form resonant patterns , the panel vibration then pushes the small particles ( sand, rice,..) to jump into those peak/null areas. https://americanhistory.si.edu/science/chladni.htm
