Spain was the first country to pass a decree abolishing slavery in its American colonies in 1542. Denmark and Haiti also outlawed slavery before Britain. But in all four cases, slavery continued until in 1833 Britain and Spain signed a treaty prohibiting the slave trade. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_Spain
