Original Note:
National debt in the UK was far higher 100 years ago than today. In 1924 it was 177% of GDP. Today it's around 94%. https://www.statista.com/statistics/282841/debt-as-gdp-uk/ Many taxes in the list have been in place for centuries. For example, Excise tax was introduced in 1643, Inheritance tax in 1894 and Income Tax in 1799. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_taxation_in_the_United_Kingdom#:~:text=William%20Pitt%20introduced%20the%20first,of%20the%20year%20ever%20since.
