Original Note:

The splattered ink design on book edges was part of a broader tradition of decoration, often using pigments like Venetian red. Also, as books started being shelved with spines facing outwards, binders began using such decoration to protect their contents from dust and handling. https://www.adelaide.edu.au/library/special/exhibitions/cover-to-cover/edge-decoration/
