The battle for Mariupol happened at the beginning of the russian invasion in Ukraine. Ukraine did not have enough anti-missile defence and russia simply shelled Mariupol non-stop. About 100k civilian casualties expected during that shelling. There was no NATO there, just AFU. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Mariupol
