The graph shown is comparing apples to oranges: the death toll is cumulative but the number of mentions of Palestinians is per day. https://theintercept.com/2024/01/09/newspapers-israel-palestine-bias-new-york-times/ If the death toll is converted to a daily count to be comparable, it would stay approximately flat over time instead of rising.
