It's plainly false that there have been "many mass protests in European capitals" against Assad. The few protests there have been in European capitals have for the most part gathered very few people: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_demonstrations_and_protests_relating_to_the_Syrian_civil_war "over 100 gathered" "around 30 Syrians gathered" etc.
