On, 27 September 1944, a representative of the ICRC did go to Auschwitz, and while he was able to speak with the Commandant, he was barred by Nazi officials from entering the camp, as part of a pattern of Nazi obstruction of ICRC efforts to investigate Nazi atrocities. https://www.icrc.org/en/document/icrc-wwii-holocaust
