Original Note:

British academic Malcolm Caldwell did visit Cambodia in December 1978 and after meeting with Pol Pot he was shot and killed. However it’s unclear whether his death was a targeted assassination by the Khmer Rouge leadership or an act by a rogue individual. https://amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/jan/10/malcolm-caldwell-pol-pot-murder https://www.dissentmagazine.org/wp-content/files_mf/1389826305d16Ezra.pdf
