Original Note:

The man in the painting bears no relation to Nat Turner. He is an unknown man of African descent first seen in the portrait ”Head of a Negro” (1777 or 1778) by John Singleton Copley. Turner was born in 1800, over twenty years after the portrait was painted in England. https://www.nga.gov/stories/black-sailor-copley-watson-shark.html
