Light is bending because of atmospheric refraction caused by a temperature gradient. When the ground is hotter the light bends upward, forming a mirage. When cold air is near the ground the reverse happens, as demonstrated in this video. https://en.wikipedia.org//wiki/Atmospheric_refraction
