According to different sources, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet%E2%80%93Afghan_War the Soviet Union was at war with afghans between 1979 to 1989. The soviet units left Afghanistan on 1989. US/Nato units entered afghanistan 2001 https://www.cfr.org/timeline/us-war-afghanistan .
