On 1 August 2008, the Russian-backed South Ossetian forces started shelling Georgian villages forcing Georgia to take action to protect its people. Russia accused Georgia of "aggression against South Ossetia". It launched a full-scale invasion of Georgia on 8 August. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russo-Georgian_War
